Lance Hood: Hi, this is Lance Hood with ARC Franchising Dot Com and today I want to introduce you to Goodbye Graffiti. Goodbye Graffiti is an executive business model that allows you to be hands on without getting them dirty and the earning potential is exceptional as you're about to hear firsthand. Our guest speaker is Laurie Spivack, the president and CEO of Goodbye Graffiti USA. Laurie, thanks for joining us.
Laurie Spivack: Thank you Lance. I'm glad to be here.
Lance Hood: What brought you to working with Goodbye Graffiti?
Laurie Spivack: Well, first I want to tell you that Goodbye Graffiti is a 20 year old Canadian franchise and they have franchised across the entire country of Canada. I was able to get a license to open a Goodbye Graffiti in Seattle and I have been running one successful Goodbye Graffiti for over 15 years and now I'm the master Franchisor for the United States. So although we're new here in the US, we are a developed franchise with systems and programs that you would expect from a franchise of this age.
Lance Hood: Very nice. Well, from your experience, firsthand and from talking with people, why do most people go into franchising?
Laurie Spivack: People want to be their own boss. Okay. Um, but franchising is a way to own a business and not have to figure it out from the beginning; to be able to follow processes and systems that have already been tested and proven will mitigate the risk. And that is a very big selling point for franchises.
Lance Hood: Why should people consider the graffiti removal industry?
Laurie Spivack: Um, well, graffiti is a generational problem. And guess what? It will never go away. In fact, I'm willing to bet that after listening to this interview, Lance, and you'll start to see graffiti and places that you didn't see it before. That's just how it is. And you can tell me
Lance Hood: What makes your opportunity unique?
Laurie Spivack: Well, no other national model provides this service and it's needed in virtually every urban area in the country. Um, our investment is low. And, uh, like I mentioned, we have over 200 hours of training. We have our own line of graffiti removal products. You can start your business at home and our services allow you to give back to your community in a direct way that many businesses can't.
Lance Hood: Yeah. It makes a big difference in how you feel everyday when the city looks nice versus having graffiti everywhere. I think it would just have an impact on the whole community as they go through and experience the city, either graffitied or CD free.
Laurie Spivack: Yeah, and I see how proud my employees are with the job that they do. I think it's very satisfying. Goodbye Graffiti is the only graffiti franchise in the United States. We're very unique. Also. We have little to no competition and that's crazy good. I'm right now being a being a Goodbye Graffiti Franchisee, you would be first to market and get in at the ground level. We also give our franchisees a large protected territory and we're only going to be granting around 125 of these, so there is a window of opportunity.
Lance Hood: So what exactly does Goodbye Graffiti do?
Laurie Spivack: We are graffiti removal specialists and a lot of cities you will see pressure washing companies that also do graffiti removal, but you will rarely see a graffiti removal company, a company that specializes in this. And we have developed our own proprietary renewable products, our own proprietary software for our franchisees and all our, our specific methods and processes for removing graffiti. So we are the experts.
Lance Hood: And then how big is the demand for graffiti removal? Because I, I see graffiti, like you say everywhere. I see it in big cities and I know as a business owner, you may not want some of the graffiti around your business. But how big is the demand?
Laurie Spivack: City governments, county governments, state governments said over... They'll spend almost $4,000,000,000 a year to mitigate graffiti. And like I said, it's a generational problem. So it will never go away? Um, and I'm not even stating what private businesses, uh, spend. So there's a huge opportunity and most cities have graffiti ordinances that tell people that they have to remove the graffiti or they'll get fined. So that's a huge incentive for people to remove their graffiti.
Lance Hood: Right. So if you know that, then you can really, you can pretty much a drive around and see who you need to talk to because they have to take care of it and you have the solution
Laurie Spivack: Definitely. And it's pretty concrete. You can't say no, I don't have graffiti.
Lance Hood: Especially if you want to be outside, it sounds like a great opportunity. What type of person is ideal for this?
Laurie Spivack: Well, we're looking for executive operators and we don't want our franchisees getting stuck, removing graffiti for 10 years because this wont allow them to grow their business and reach their professional as well as the market potential. So when we look for people who have leadership qualities, definitely the ability to delegate, communicate and work as a team member is also very important. Doing sales and technical jobs will be important at the beginning to give the franchisee perspective. Um, so you probably will be getting your hands dirty at the beginning, but we encourage our franchisee to get out of those roles as soon as possible and hire people.
Lance Hood: Got It. So when you get started, you're going to learn it, but then you're going to really step back and be in more of a management role, which not only gets you out of the day to day graffiti removal, but allows you to scale your business and work with far more customers because you're not doing the work yourselves.
Laurie Spivack: Exactly
Lance Hood: What kind of support is available for people to, um, get their business off the ground and understand what they need to do.
Laurie Spivack: So we have a very robust training program with, call it graffiti university and we're the only graffiti university in the country. In fact, our training program is over 200 hours. So we start at our headquarters in Seattle and then, uh, our franchisees will get trained in administrative, technical and marketing and sales and then we will meet our franchisees at their location and work with them some more in all those areas. Um, and then we'll even come back about three months later to fine tune their skills to make sure they're on the right path or talking to the right people. There are doing the graffiti removal correctly there, all of the environment protocols are being followed. Um, and that's part of, that's another thing about our business that makes us unique. So if you asked me that question, I've got a whole list of things that show how unique we are.
Lance Hood: Well, what are the typical questions that a potential franchisee would have about your company?
Laurie Spivack: Um, sometimes they say, well, I can pressure wash. Okay, can't I just do it on my own? And my response is a question to them, do you want to be a guy with a truck and a pressure washer who also removes graffiti because there's so many businesses like that, but so few specialists and that's what we, that's what we provide all of that to create a sustainable executive business. Another question they ask is what kind of opportunities out there, I mean after you remove the graffiti, then what do you do? And again, I say this again, that first of all there's so many opportunities in this business and the graffiti will always come back. So also, you're not just selling graffiti removal and you're selling anti graffiti coatings, you're selling our maintenance program, which is a very strong and sustainable reoccurring income stream and you are selling some pressure washing. So we're specialists who remove graffiti, but we will also do pressure washing.
Lance Hood: I mean, that makes sense now that you're working in the preventative thing, but definitely it's almost like a, the more active the graffiti community is, the more active you are and it kinda, it kinda works out nicely for the franchisees.
Laurie Spivack: Also, um, as cities grow and get denser, then the graffiti seemed to grow with it. Um, and I don't know exactly why, but I think much of it has to do with the impersonality and I don't know if that's the right word. People when they, they passed properties and objects, it's impersonal. It's not a specific, a threat to somebody like the person who owns that building or lives in that building. So there's just more density, more to tag.
Lance Hood: What's the typical ramp up time?
Laurie Spivack: I would say the ramp up time is 90 days or so. Um, because our training is so thorough and we repeat things and come back and come back again, that we instill all our processes and how we run our business, who we talked to. Um, another aspect of our training that I didn't mention is a marketing piece that I developed and it's a quick-start marketing program where the Franchisee will learn about the stakeholders in their community since we're not, this is not a consumer related business. We are business to business and also with the government we do work with. So they learn who these stakeholders are, what's important to them, what they do. And then we sit down and create a three month marketing plan and this is to get the Franchisee to identify these people and get themselves in front of them so that they can start building relationships with them. Long term relationships and you know, start earning money.
Lance Hood: Well, I can see how this would be a great opportunity for the right person. And I just wanted to tell everybody who's listening right now. If you're genuinely committed to getting a franchise, let's have a conversation. Let's make sure you get the right one because most franchises will compensate me for my time. There's no charge for my services and you can reach me at 888-627-2776, or schedule time to speak with me at SpeakWithLance.com.
Laurie Spivack: Can I add something to that, Lance?
Lance Hood: Sure.
Laurie Spivack: Okay. Um, so when you're doing something new, I think it's really important to surround yourself with people who know more than you do, so you don't end up reinventing the wheel through all of your mistakes. And also starting a business, whether it's a franchise or a business from scratch, it's a big deal. Um, so I highly recommend working with a professional.
Lance Hood: Thank you. Lori. Opening a franchise can be incredible and it can give you a better quality of life and end up becoming one of the best investments you ever make. But like any other investment, you don't want to go into a guessing, gambling or blind. Not all franchises are successful. My name's Lance Hood. My services are free. Let me help you find a better franchise.
Laurie Spivack: Thanks, Lance. Bye.
